(Ghost: ‘a faint trace’ ,‘a faint secondary image’ — Oxford Dictionary)
Starting with Picasso we will look at how ‘faint secondary images’ are embedded in a fractured nude to suggest a ghostly presence; this will be contrasted with a Surrealist figurative nude in a ghostly nocturnal setting. We will look at nudes buried within encrusted, scratched paintwork, in which the textures themselves create ‘a trace’, a haunting image of ancient cultures. Following the idea of ‘the trace’ we will explore sculptures (c1980) made from fabric and clothes shaped by naked bodies exuding sensual warmth through imprints, which supplant the body itself but capture haunting , tactile images of human presence.
Each tour costs £10 or all four for £36.
