Kenneth Clark’s Civilisation

As the BBC plans a remake of Civilisation, we discuss the original series.

7:00pm, Monday 12 May 2014, London

It is 45 years since Kenneth Clark’s classic series Civilisation was first broadcast by the BBC. Decried by radicals as elitist, it continues to be hailed by many as a masterpiece. The series is the subject of a forthcoming retrospective at Tate Britain. And the BBC is planning a remake. As the Telegraph asks, is there anyone who is up to the task? More importantly, how will the new series match up to Clark’s epic?

SPEAKER(S)

Dave Bowden, special projects manager at the Academy of Ideas, will introduce a discussion on the original series.
