Policy over a pint: Calling time on Working Mens’ Clubs
At the first of the Social Policy Forum spin-off talks Ruth Cherrington, will be talking about the different aspects of the clubs at the centre of her book ‘Not Just Beer and Bingo! A Social History of Working Men’s Clubs’
Why were they set up in the first place? What were they all about? Is there still a role for them today?
Ruth also runs a very popular website dedicated to collecting club histories and memories- www.clubhistorians.co.uk
“Too often, clubs have been ignored, misunderstood, even condemned outright by people who have never set foot inside one! I set out to tell their story and document some of the experiences of millions of clubs members across 150 years.’
The event will be hosted by Dave Clements, convener of Social Policy Forum and founder of Policy over a Pint.
The venue, Possessed, is very fitting for the event: a vintage shop ‘steeped in glamour, individuality and style.’
There will be time for questions and discussion over a drink.
The evening will finish with a few games of prize bingo!
